Snake returns in a focused old-school format built around precise movement, quick decisions, and score chasing. Guide the snake toward food, grow longer with every pickup, and keep enough space to survive as the board becomes increasingly difficult to navigate.

Classic rules Eat food, extend the snake, and avoid collisions as your available space becomes tighter.
Responsive controls Use Arrow keys, WASD, swipe gestures, or the on-screen directional pad.
Retro presentation Monochrome LCD-inspired visuals, compact scoring, and a deliberately simple arcade layout.

How to Play Snake

Your snake moves continuously across the grid. Guide its head toward the food pixel. Every food you collect increases your score and makes the snake one segment longer. The run ends if the head touches the outer wall or collides with the snake's own body.

The challenge becomes harder naturally: as the snake grows, it occupies more of the board and leaves fewer safe paths. In this Aitchy.Games version, the pace also increases during longer runs, so planning ahead becomes more important than reacting at the last second.

Choose Your Snake Speed

Use the mode buttons below the game screen before starting a run. All three modes follow the same classic rules; only the starting pace changes.

Long runs gradually become faster in every mode. Your best score is stored in your browser, so you can leave the page and come back later without creating an account.

Classic Snake Strategy: 7 Tips for a Higher Score

1. Look one turn ahead

Do not steer only toward the food. Before every turn, check where your head will be after the move and whether your tail will block the next escape route. A safe path to the food is more valuable than the shortest path.

2. Keep open space in front of the head

As your snake becomes longer, open space is your main resource. Avoid filling the center of the board with random loops. Try to keep a large connected area available so you still have room to turn.

3. Use the edges with care

Following an outside edge can simplify movement because one side of the snake is protected from its own body. But corners are dangerous when your tail is nearby, so enter them only when you already know how you will exit.

4. Do not chase every food directly

If food appears inside a tight loop or near your body, take the longer route. Snake rewards patience. A few extra grid movements cost nothing, while one bad shortcut ends the entire run.

5. Create long lanes

When the snake is large, controlled back-and-forth lanes are easier to manage than small circles. Think of the board as rows you can sweep while leaving enough space to move from one lane to the next.

6. Avoid instant opposite turns

A classic Snake cannot reverse directly into its own neck. This game blocks illegal opposite-direction inputs automatically, but good players still build a rhythm around clean 90-degree turns.

7. Learn on Classic before pushing Turbo

High speed is fun, but board awareness matters more than raw reaction time. Once you can consistently build a long snake in Classic mode, move to Fast or Turbo and apply the same routes at a quicker pace.

Quick challenge: first aim for 100 points without using pause. Then try to beat the same score on Fast mode.

Designed Around the Classic Experience

The game keeps the core mechanics deliberately simple: one grid, one snake, one target, and increasingly limited space. The monochrome display, compact scoreboard, restrained sound effects, and direct controls are intended to preserve the character of classic Snake without distracting from the game itself.

Movement is tuned for keyboard, touch, and swipe input, while the layout scales cleanly across different screen sizes. The game also pauses automatically when the page loses focus, helping preserve an active run during accidental tab changes.

Why the Game Gets Harder

Snake uses a simple rule set—move, eat, grow, and avoid collisions—but every successful pickup changes the board. A longer body creates more obstacles, reduces available routes, and makes each turn more important than the last.

That natural difficulty curve is what gives the game its depth. Early movement is mostly reactive; longer runs demand route planning, timing, and careful use of open space.

Snake Game FAQ

How do you play Snake?

Guide the snake toward the food, grow longer, and avoid hitting the walls or your own body. Use the Arrow keys or WASD on desktop. On phones and tablets, swipe across the game screen or use the on-screen directional buttons.

Does this Snake game work on mobile?

Yes. The game area resizes for smaller screens and supports both swipe controls and a touch D-pad. You can also use fullscreen mode on supported browsers.

What are the keyboard controls?

Use the Arrow keys or WASD to move. Press Space or P to pause and resume, Enter to start or play again, and R to restart the current run.

Does Snake save my high score?

Yes. Your best score is saved locally in your browser using local storage. The score stays on your device and does not require a user account.

How can I get a higher score?

Plan turns before you reach them, preserve open space, avoid trapping your head inside loops, and take a longer safe route when the food appears in a risky position. Practice on Classic mode before moving to faster modes.

Build a Better Run

Choose a speed, learn how the snake responds, and focus on keeping future routes open rather than chasing the shortest path to each food. The best runs come from controlled movement, good spacing, and knowing when to take the safer route.
